The Department for Interventions in Healthcare Facilities was established in September 2001. The main goal of the department is the implementation of actions and strategies to promote public health within healthcare facilities. These actions and strategies are accomplished through:
Fields of responsibility of the Office for Nosocomial Infections, Antimicrobial Resistance and Strategic Use of Antibiotics include infection control and prevention in hospital, strategic use of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance, and hospital epidemiology. The Office is working towards reducing healthcare- associated infections through various activities. Current main fields of action are development and coordination of the Greek hand hygiene campaign and the national plan for the prevention and control of nosocomial infections caused by multi- drug- resistant Gram-negative pathogens in healthcare settings, the PROKROUSTIS project.
The Office for Travel Medicine was created to improve standards in travel medicine and protect the health of international travellers. This is carried out through health promotion and disease prevention for travelers, and by improving the quality of travel health advice available to providers through training programmes and seminars. Moreover, consistent and authoritative national guidance on travel health matters is developed for travel health professionals. Finally, the Office carries out surveillance of infectious and non-infectious hazards abroad, producing accessible regular output and providing guidance on travel-related emergency situations.
